History
Louise Baur (nee Chandler) was born to parents Roy and Marguerite Chandler. Louise married Joe Baur in 1950 at St. Columba's Church in Strawberry Vale. Louise and Joe were both teachers and volunteered actively. They moved to View Royal Avenue in the late 1950s and had 5 children.
After a career as a teacher, including 23 years at Camosun College teaching English as a second language, Louise settled into retirement with plans of travel and gardening. She also filled her extra time with volunteering. For three years, Louise volunteered with the breakfast program at L’École Shoreline Community middle school, serving toast and jam to students. From there she went on to volunteer with a reading program at View Royal elementary. The “Reading Grandmas” worked with Grade 4 students to encourage literacy and the joys of reading. Louise became interested in history while volunteering with the Canadiana Costume Museum, which has since closed.
Louise was one of the founding members of the View Royal Archives, where she continues to volunteer today. In 2012 Louise was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her substantial volunteer work in the community, particularly her work with the View Royal Archives.
