Strawberry Vale and District Community Club

The Strawberry Vale and District Community Club was founded in 1947 and incorporated in 1948. Prior to the official formation of the Club, the community was still very active in the area. The Strawberry Vale Community Hall, the center for the club's activities, was completed in 1895 and hosted many gatherings. Since 1948, the Club has been overseen by an elected body of officers and introduced a membership fee, which started at fifty cents. Over the years, the Club has held many sports events, social functions, and fundraising activities.

Baur, Louise

Louise Baur (nee Chandler) was born to parents Roy and Marguerite Chandler. Louise married Joe Baur in 1950 at St. Columba's Church in Strawberry Vale. Louise and Joe were both teachers and volunteered actively. They moved to View Royal Avenue in the late 1950s and had 5 children.
After a career as a teacher, including 23 years at Camosun College teaching English as a second language, Louise settled into retirement with plans of travel and gardening. She also filled her extra time with volunteering. For three years, Louise volunteered with the breakfast program at L’École Shoreline Community middle school, serving toast and jam to students. From there she went on to volunteer with a reading program at View Royal elementary. The “Reading Grandmas” worked with Grade 4 students to encourage literacy and the joys of reading. Louise became interested in history while volunteering with the Canadiana Costume Museum, which has since closed.
Louise was one of the founding members of the View Royal Archives, where she continues to volunteer today. In 2012 Louise was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her substantial volunteer work in the community, particularly her work with the View Royal Archives.

Duffus, Maureen

A 4th generation Victorian and descendent of the Yates family, Maureen attended Victoria College and earned a BA at UBC. She went on to become an accomplished reporter, feature writer, columnist, and editor at the Ottawa Citizen, Victoria Daily Times, and the Daily Colonist. Her columns often drew upon her family's life on a small farm in View Royal and her amusement over the challenges of raising horses, sheep, chickens, and children.
Maureen was married to Dr. John Duffus, who was Dean of Science and Engineering at Royal Roads Military College and had two sons.
Maureen is also the author of several books including “A Most Unusual Colony”, “Craigflower Country”, “Beyond the Blue Bridge - Stories from Esquimalt”, “Old Langford - An Illustrated History”, and “Battlefront Nurses in World War One”. Maureen was one of the founding members of the View Royal Archives, and in 2012, she was honoured for her decades of community service by being awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.

Griffiths, Rosemary

Rosemary Griffiths is a life-long resident of View Royal. She has made significant donations of Stewart Family materials to the View Royal Archives and has served as a longtime volunteer. Rosemary was a young child when her mother Ethel (Stewart) Tapley died and was adopted by her aunt Dorothy and Uncle Bert, becoming a Keiser. She worked as a secretary at View Royal Elementary School for many years.

Bishop, Sharon

Sharon Bishop (nee Wilmshurst) is a longtime resident of View Royal. She and her family have made significant donations to the View Royal Archives, where she also generously volunteers her time and knowledge. She and her husband, Pete, were owners and operators at Pete's Tent and Awning Ltd on Island Hwy.

Darby, Julia A.

Julia Darby was a doll collector who lived on View Royal Avenue. Her house was called "Doll House" because of her collection.

Martin, Marjorie

Marjorie Dawson was born in Saskatchewan to parents Frank and Hilda May (nee Perry) Dawson. They moved to Victoria and lived on Wilkinson Road. She married Colin Curtis Martin (1914-1972) in 1938. Colin was born in Manitoba to parents William Curtis Martin and Nelly Coutts. Colin was employed as a dairyman at Raper farm and was living on Burnside Road near Granville Avenue in 1938 at the time he married Marjorie. Colin and Marjorie Martin moved to 79 High street in 1940.

Holland, Velda

Velda Holland was born to Fred and Aurina (Rena) Holland in Victoria, BC in 1909. The family lived at 1315 Camosun Street from 1910-1954. She graduated with a Domestic Science Diploma from Girls' Central School in 1924. She earned an advanced certificate in penmanship lessons in the Commercial Edition of the MacLean Method of Muscular Movement Writing in 1925; completed a regular course of study in the Stenography Department with honours from Sprott Shaw Business Institute in 1926; passed a junior theoretical musical exam with distiniction in April 1933 and an intermediate organ exam in June 1933 in Victoria, BC through the McGill University Conservatorium of Music. She went on to teach music education, serve as All Saints Church Chair, and work as a secretary at Royal Roads Military College, and held a British Columbia Driver's Licence in 1929. She moved from View Royal to a retirement home in Saanich and passed away in 2001.

Hourigan family

The Hourigan family farm was located just north of Victoria General Hospital off Helmcken Road between Watkiss Way and Burnside Road. They purchased the farm around 1954 and were until the mid 2010s. The family home was located at 23 Helmcken Road, the current location of the Eagle Creek shopping complex.
